Boxer Calls on Egyptian Government to Lift Travel Ban on Foreign Aid Workers

Senator Also Urges Egyptian Officials to Return Confiscated Property and Cease Harassment of Groups Working to Assist the Egyptian People

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today called on the Egyptian government to lift the travel ban that it has imposed on foreign workers, including Americans, who are working for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Egypt.

According to the Washington Post, as many as 40 workers for NGOs have been placed on a travel ban list by Egyptian officials following a series of raids on the offices of non-profit groups in late December.

Senator Boxer said, “I am deeply concerned about the escalating crackdown on non-governmental organizations and their employees in Egypt. These are humanitarian workers from the United States and other countries who are there to help build a brighter future for the Egyptian people. The travel ban should be lifted, the property of these groups should be returned and the harassment of these workers should end immediately.”
