Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Judge Anthony Battaglia for U.S. Southern District of California Court in San Diego

Boxer Recommended Battaglia for Nomination to the White House

Washington, D.C. – U. S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today praised the Senate Judiciary Committee’s unanimous approval of Magistrate Judge Anthony J. Battaglia to serve as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of California. Senator Boxer recommended Judge Battaglia to President Obama.

President Obama first nominated Judge Battaglia last year, and the Senate Judiciary Committee approved his nomination unanimously in December. However, Senate Republicans blocked his confirmation before the end of the last session.

Senator Boxer said, “Judge Battaglia is a highly respected magistrate judge who has been approved unanimously twice by the Senate Judiciary Committee. It is now critical that the Senate move swiftly to confirm him so he can begin serving the people of the Southern District.”

Since 1993, Battaglia has served as a magistrate judge in the Southern District of California, where he handles trials, preliminary criminal proceedings, misdemeanor pleas and sentencing, felony guilty pleas and other matters in San Diego. Before becoming a judge, he was a litigator in private practice. Battaglia is the immediate past president of the Federal Magistrate Judges Association.

Judge Battaglia earned his bachelor’s degree from the United States International University, which is now Alliant International University. He received his law degree from the California Western School of Law.

The Southern District of California covers San Diego and Imperial Counties.
