Today, as the chair of the bipartisan Senate Afterschool Caucus, I joined with New York Yankees All-Star first baseman Mark Teixeira and afterschool advocates at a Congressional Briefing to discuss the connection between physical activity and academic success – and the critical role afterschool programs play in keeping kids fit and active.

I am proud to have authored bipartisan legislation that established the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program, which helps 1.6 million children nationwide access high-quality afterschool programs.  These programs provide our kids with activities such as physical education, arts and music that are proven to help improve their academic performance.
