The event begins with a presentation of the colors by the El Monte/South El Monte VFW, followed by introductions and comments by the Mayor and council members. We will have current and former veterans speak about their experiences defending our country.

The event will conclude with a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps by a trumpeter from South El Monte High School Band. Refreshments will be served after the event.

Memorial Day Commemoration

This special commemoration will be for Pfc. Karina S. Lau, Merced County's first female-recorded casualty, from Livingston. In her honor and those who may follow we will be dedicating a new Veterans Memorial in the park, titled "VETERANS FOR FREEDOM ARE NOT FORGOTTEN."

Memorial Day services will also honor all Veterans who have made the supreme sacrifice for our country and our way of life. Keeping the spirit alive, Merced was one of the earliest in the nation to honor Vietnam Veterans when the first Merced County Memorial was unveiled on Monday, October 25, 1976. Today the park proudly presents memorials for all veterans of all wars.

The reading will continue after the ceremony until all names have been read.

- The light rail system passes in front of the Convention Center, as an alternate.
