Senator Boxer Works to Save San Pedro Social Security Office
June 21 , 2007
Earlier this year, the Social Security Administration announced plans to close the San Pedro Social Security Office and consolidate services in Long Beach. I oppose this plan, believing that people who need Social Security services should be able to visit an office near them. Below you will find the text of my letter to Social Security regarding this matter. You can count on me to continue to oppose this action.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

Mr. Peter D. Spencer

Dear Mr. Spencer:
I am writing to express my opposition to a proposal to close the San Pedro Branch Social Security (SSA) office and consolidate its services with the Social Security office in Long Beach.
This proposal could have a potentially serious negative impact on elderly and disabled residents of the San Pedro community who have little ability to travel long distances or depend on public transportation to get to a Social Security office.
Social Security is one of the most successful programs for people in our nation’s history. We should not forget that people depend on Social Security for more than just retirement benefits, but also for disability and survivor benefits.
The proposal to close the San Pedro facility will have a direct impact on the residents of the San Pedro area. It is my understanding that an estimated 300 persons visit this office each working day.
I urge you to work with the County of Los Angeles to explore viable options to ensure that these services can be maintained for San Pedro area residents.
Please provide me with your progress working with the County in regard to this issue.
I look forward to a prompt response and to working with you and the representatives of San Pedro to preserve these services.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
