Senator Boxer: Federal Funds to Help Fresno Schools

I am pleased to let you know that the Fresno Unified School District will receive federal funding to help expand the District’s magnet school programs.  The $3.18 million federal grant will enable more students to make better choices about specialized studies by creating magnet schools.

The Fresno Unified School District is working to create magnet programs at four of its middle and high schools featuring academic specialties such as environmental science, public safety, career management and engineering and manufacturing.  The aim is to better prepare students for college and for the job market.

Magnet schools draw students from the entire district instead of from a geographic area.  The students focus their education on a specific academic area, though they are responsible for learning all of the California curriculum.

I strongly supported its grant application to the Department of Education when Fresno Unified applied for this funding and am pleased that Fresno’s school children will have greater opportunities to pursue the specialized educational programs that will result.
