One of the most solemn ways that our nation honors its veterans is by offering burial at a National Cemetery.  National Cemeteries are truly hallowed ground and serve as a reminder to us all of the ultimate sacrifice made by members of our military.

Although there are currently seven National Cemeteries in California, some are no longer accepting burials except for close family members of those already buried or interred there.  Moreover, in many cases, National Cemeteries can be distant from the families of deceased veterans.  This is especially true for residents of Kern and Tulare Counties, which together are home to a rapidly growing number of veterans and their families.  

I have written to the Senate’s Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans to request that funding be appropriated for the initial work to establish a Veterans Cemetery in Bakersfield.  This work should begin as quickly as possible both to create more space for our veterans in California and to give local residents a burial place that is close to their homes.

I am working every day to ensure that our veterans receive the care and attention that they deserve.  It is only fitting and proper that we must create National Cemeteries as the final resting place to those who gave so much to serve and protect our nation.  I am pleased to be an advocate for a Bakersfield National Cemetery.
