Senator Boxer: Celebrate World Ocean Day
June 6, 2008
I invite you to join in commemorating World Ocean Day on Sunday, June 8. First proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, World Ocean Day is a time to both celebrate the wonders of the ocean world and renew our commitment to improving the quality of our oceans.
Regardless of where you live, your life is impacted by our oceans. They generate most of the oxygen we breathe, help to feed us, clean the water we drink, and regulate our climate. The health of our oceans is vitally important to us all. In fact, the intimate relationship between our oceans and our climate is highlighted by many of the World Ocean Day organizers as they encourage people to focus on "helping our climate, helping our ocean." Another focus is on this year’s theme for World Ocean Day, marking the importance of coral reefs, which hold abundant life in our oceans and are, at the same time, in great peril because of global warming and pollution.
If you would like to join in a celebration of World Ocean Day, please use this link to learn more about events that are planned for California.
Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
