WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH 2007

As all Americans once again celebrate the month of March as Women's History Month, Senator Boxer wishes to honor her fellow Californian, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the first ever woman to be elected as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

After accepting the gavel as the new Speaker at her inauguration, Pelosi spoke about the importance of this historic moment (text and images courtesy of http://speaker.house.gov):

[This] is a moment for which we have waited for over 200 years. Never losing faith, we waited through the many years of struggle to achieve our rights. But women were not just waiting; women were working. Never losing faith, we worked to redeem the promise of America that all men and women are created equal. For our daughters and our granddaughters, today we have broken the marble ceiling. For our daughters and our granddaughters, the sky is the limit. Anything is possible for them.

Pelosi comes from a strong family tradition of public service.  Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr., served as Mayor of Baltimore for 12 years, after representing the city for five terms in Congress. Her brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III, also served as Mayor of Baltimore.
