Boxer Lauds $46 Million to Help Replace Doyle Drive

Department of Transportation Announcement Will Create Jobs, Protect Safety of Bay Area Residents

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today praised U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s announcement that $46 million in new funding from the Recovery Act will help complete the replacement of Doyle Drive, the critical artery that links the Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio and the City of San Francisco.

Senator Boxer said, “This investment will create jobs and help us finish rebuilding Doyle Drive, which is structurally deficient. I applaud Secretary LaHood for approving this grant to complete a project that is critical to the Bay Area economy and the safety of commuters and residents.”

Senator Boxer has long worked to secure funding for the rebuilding of Doyle Drive, including securing $3.7 million for the project in the omnibus appropriations bill last year.

Secretary LaHood announced today that Doyle Drive will receive the grant through the TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) Discretionary Grant Program, a competitive grant program that supports projects that promise significant economic and environmental benefits to a metropolitan area, region or state.

The grant will complete the financing for the $1.045 billion project and will help finish work on the new Presidio Parkway, including construction of a high-viaduct structure between the Park Presidio Exchange and San Francisco National Cemetery.  The project will also make improvements to pedestrian access and help maintain existing parking in the area.

This project was one of four California projects that received federal transportation grants totaling $130 million today.
