Boxer Lauds Senate Passage of Travel Promotion Bill

Washington, DC –U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today lauded Senate passage of the Travel Promotion Act of 2009, which will establish a non-profit corporation to promote international travel to the United States and boost the nation’s travel and tourism economy.

Travel and tourism are a critical part of California’s economy.  The California Travel and Tourism Commission estimates that travelers spent nearly$100 billion in California in 2008 and that international travelers accounted for nearly 20 percent of that spending.  The California Travel and Tourism Commission also estimates that 924,000 California jobs rely on the travel industry.

Senator Boxer said, “This is a jobs bill.  Nearly one million Californians depend on a strong tourism economy to earn their living. California’s natural beauty and rich history have long brought visitors to our great state.  This bill will ensure that we continue to draw visitors to California and keep our tourism economy strong.”

According to the U.S. Travel Association, one out of every eight jobs in America depends on travel and tourism.
