Boxer, Feinstein and Stark Laud Help for NUMMI Workers
Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein (both D-CA) as well as Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA) today lauded the Department of Labor’s announcement that workers at the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) facility in Fremont, CA are eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).
NUMMI workers can now apply for job training, job search and relocation assistance, and tax credits to cover health insurance costs.
Earlier this month, Senators Boxer and Feinstein and Congressman Stark wrote to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis asking her to approve California’s request for theseTAA benefits.
Senator Boxer said, “The Labor Department did the right thing to help these workers. This commitment will help them make ends meet and find new employment.”
“The workers at NUMMI are entering the ranks of the jobless at the worst possible time, during a recession of historic proportions. This Trade Adjustment Assistance will help ease what is otherwise certain to be a difficult transition for these workers and their families. It’s critical that these workers get help to train for new positions, to find new jobs and to keep their health insurance. With this assistance, they can do exactly that,” Senator Feinstein said.
Representative Stark said, “The workers at the NUMMI plant have built some of the best cars and trucks in the country. I have confidence that workers of such high caliber will rebound, and this assistance will give them the financial stability they need during the difficult period of transition."
