Boxer Secures Funding for Los Angeles Area  

 

Washington, DC– Yesterday, the U.S. Senate passed an omnibus appropriations bill that includes funding requested by U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) for key initiatives in the Los Angeles area.

The omnibus passed the Senate by a vote of 57 to 35 and now goes to President Obama for his signature.

The bill also includes $50 million for the Railroad Safety Technology grant program.  Last summer Senators Boxer and John D. Rockefeller IV (D-WV) requested full funding for this critical grant program that provides funding for necessary safety improvements, including the installation of positive train control (PTC) – anti-collision technology.

The following are investments secured by Senator Boxer for the Los Angeles area:

Metrolink - Positive Train Control

Location: Los Angeles

Amount: $487,000

Funding will be used to pay part of the cost of installing Positive Train Control – a train collision avoidance technology system – on more than 216 miles of track, which is estimated to cost $201 million.

Domestic Abuse Response Team

Recipient: City of Los Angeles

Amount: $100,000

These funds would be used to hire more employees for Los Angeles’ Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART). DART is a collaboration between LAPD and specially-trained victim advocates who provide counseling, education and shelter referrals to victims in order to effectively reduce domestic violence.

Los Angeles Universal Preschool and Teacher Training Program

Amount: $150,000

Funding will be used to increase access to high-quality preschool for underserved children in Los Angeles County and hire fully-credentialed teachers.

Los Angeles Youth Opportunity Movement

Amount: $500,000

Funding will be used to support the Los Angeles Youth Opportunity Movement – a program designed to create opportunities to help young people reach their education and employment goals.  Program case managers work extensively with youth through home visits, school visits, meetings with parents and regular meetings with each young person.

Good Samaritan Hospital Peripheral Vascular Diseases Lab Improvements

Location: Los Angeles, California

Amount: $400,000

Funding will be used to expand Good Samaritan Hospital’s peripheral vascular diseases laboratory in order to address the growing incidence of diabetes and its associated complications.

Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center

Recipient: City of Anaheim

Amount: $725,000

Funding will be used to support Phase 1 of the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center project, which includes relocating the Anaheim Amtrak/Metrolink station, supporting transit facilities, providing improved access to buses, and encouraging transit-oriented economic development.

Interstate 5 Santa Clarita-Los Angeles Gateway Improvement Project

Recipient: Golden State Gateway Coalition

Location: Santa Clarita, California

Amount: $750,000

Funding will be used to expand carpool lanes on Interstate 5 from State Route 14 to Parker Road. This expansion as well as incorporating truck climbing lanes will ease congestion throughout the area.

San Gabriel Trench Project

Recipient: Alameda Corridor- East (ACE) Construction Authority

Location: San Gabriel, California

Amount: $500,000

Funding will be used to support the construction of a railroad trench in San Gabriel to grade separate busy rail-highway crossings, increasing public safety and easing traffic congestion.

California Chrysalis Job Training Initiative

Location: Los Angeles, California

Amount: $500,000

Funding will be used for administrative costs at Chrysalis, a successful organization in Los Angeles that helps homeless and economically disadvantaged men and women get and keep jobs and ultimately attain long-term self-sufficiency.
